What changes happened to Japan when the Portuguese and English came?
The first Europeans came were the Portuguese in 1543, the Portuguese actually shipwrecked to Japan. After the first Portuguese arrival, they were followed by the Jesuit missionary order. The Jesuit missionary order worked closely with the daimyo of the samurai class. About a century after the Portuguese arrival, they are followed by the Dutch and British. The Dutch and British’s goal was to establish trading with Japan.
The Portuguese introduced the earliest model of guns to the Japanese called the arquebus, they introduced Japan to new foods and materials that had never been seen on Japan. The Europeans introduced japan to tobacco and clocks. The Japanese military changed a lot to because the foreigners introduced the Japanese to handguns and cannons. The Japanese named the Portuguese “namban” which means southern barbarians the Portuguese sailed to japan from the south.
