During the Edo period when the Tokugawa reign was over thrown, war was no longer seen in Japan so there was no use for fine warriors. This meant that the samurai had to develop skills in different areas such as becoming bureaucrats, teachers or artists. Some samurai were even taught read, write and use the abacus so that they could become administrators as well as fine warriors.
